The Deutsche Welle: “Made for minds” broadcaster service published the article: “EU’s Frontex warns of new migrant route to Spain” stating “European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said Friday that the Brussels-based body would put forward a plan in September for securing the European Union’s borders. One of the commission’s proposals, he said, would be to deploy 10,000 border agents from 2020.” The claim appeared on the 7th of July 2018 in the Top stories section of the website.
President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, made the claim during the speech he gave at the European Parliament on the conclusions of the European Council meeting. During the meetings the Council made various important decisions regarding migration, security and defense as well as economic and financial matters (including Brexit and the Eurozone).
State of the Union
On September the 12th, 2018, Juncker delivered his annual State of the Union address in the European Parliament Hemicycle. Each year, the State of the Union address balances the achievements of the past year and displays the priorities for the year ahead. The speech and the following paper with the Authorized Version confirmed the statement made in July.
One of the biggest concerns of migration was border security. One of the highlights was the incredible progress that had been made during the past year referring to the reforms on the Common European Asylum System. In spite of the progress made, Juncker expressed his worry on external border security. Therefore, the Commission proposed to further strengthen the European Border and Coast Guard, corresponding to the challenges Europe is facing and to better protect EU’s external borders with an additional 10,000 European border guards by 2020.
